ACPA Helps Lead the Charge at Rally for Roads

An impressive crowd of several hundred energized transportation stakeholders participated in the 2nd annual "Rally for Roads" in Washington, D.C., on March 20, 2012.

Working with other transportation-construction, labor associations, and highway user groups, ACPA assisted with the event planning and promotion, as well as staffing.

...

One change this year, advocated by ACPA, was to focus more attention on highway users, who along with representatives of the transportation-construction industry made a strong appeal for Congress to pass the highway bill now.

Several elected federal officials spoke at the event, including leaders of the Senate and House
committees responsible for the highway bill, as well as both Republican and Democratic members involved in the House Transportation & Infrastructure (T&I) and Energy & Commerce Committees.

Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.), Chair of the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee
and Rep. John Mica (R-Fla.-07), T&I Committee Chair. Also speaking at the event were: Rep. Jason Altmire (D-Pa.-04); Rep. Peter DeFazio (D-Wash.-04); Rep. Tom Petri (R-Wis.-06); Rep.

Hardy Johnson, Titan America, addresses participants at the second annual Rally for Roads. (Photo courtesy of Kerri Leininger, NRMCA.)

Nick Rahall (D-W.V.-03), Ranking Member of the House T&I Committee; and Rep. John Shimkus (R-Ill.-19). Former Rep. Max Sandlin (D-Texas-01), who served as master of ceremonies.

ACPA staff also appreciated the opportunity to contribute talking points for the first presenter at the event, Hardy Johnson, Chief Government & Public Affairs Officer, at Titan America, Norfolk, Va. Johnson is also the past chairman (2004) of the National Ready-Mixed Concrete Association and a past chairman of NRMCA’s Government Affairs Committee.

Overall, the common thread through all of the speakers’ messages, is that now is the time for Congress to deliver a surface transportation bill for the President to sign into law. We simply cannot afford wait any longer, because the price of inaction will be much too high.

In addition to Johnson, other speakers included: Paul Taylor, Vice President of the National Corn Growers' Association; Jonathan Gold, Vice President of the National Retail Federation; and Dave Kyle, General Manager of Trademasters Service Corp. Also speaking at the event were sponsors of the event.
